Taylor - I feel your pain! I just got done replacing the timing chain cover on my 86, along with all the heater hoses & thermostat. On the thermostat housing I have the allen head bolts - I think I used a ball headed 8mm allen wrench with a bit trimmed off the short end. Tedious, but it went well. Now this weekend I gotta do a heater core in my wife's (MagsNag) 90 LX. Not looking forward to it!

its not stupid bad its just tedious and awkward and i broke the mess out of the mounting tabs that hold on the gauge cluster surround the part that has the light switch and hazard light switch so now it kinda moves when i turn on the lights and other lil stuff like that but i will tell you take out all the bolts in the firewall before you take out the dash there is one big screw type bolt that is a self drilling screw but big and the head is inside the car the other 2 are under the hood if you do like me and only take out the 2 under the dash youll pull the heaterbox out and only come like half way out and then you have to put the whole thing back together to get the one screw out and then take it all back apart to take thos out before you take the dash off or your headed for trouble

Only heater core replacement i will do is on a factory non-a/c equipped car. The non a/c cars take all of about 20 minutes to change the heater core.
I have no problems whatsoever paying someone a couple hundred bucks to replace a heater core in a a/c equipped car

Wow - That's reasonable!!! I don't mind doing heater cores, but on the 90 I'm gonna have my hands full with diagnosing. The vents & floor work, but the defrost doesn't. So, I'm thinking a vacuum motor, but I'll know more when I get into it.

 Heater core is done on the 90. Not too bad - the vacuum motor that actuates the defrost was dead - so I got another and we're all good. Now I don't have to use my hand to wipe the window in the mornings!

Yeah - I think. I used a 7/16's socket with a long extention to get it out. It's right at the bottom of the box - right at the carpet line. It's almost like a self tapping sheet metal screw that goes right through the firewall down at the bottom. Anyway, yeah - it was a bit of a project because I had to check all the vacuum motors...then had to find a replacement for one. While I had the dash out, I had other issues to fix as well. There's a steel plate that holds the fuse block. That was broke - fixed it. I think the most frustrating thing was just trying to find and fix all the problems the previous owner left for me. Either way, it's done! I got no leftover screws and 98% of the previous rattles are all gone! (and no - I didn't use a buch of bubble gum and shoe strings!) Much better!!! Now if I could just find another 200 horsepower for it!! :jester:
