SPEC clutches

Thought I'd throw in my $.02 on the clutch I purchased. Anyone else chime in if you have any experience.

I bought a SPEC Stage 1 before I started working at SPEC and I honestly thought it was a bit chattery. But low & behold after about 500 miles, it was smooth as glass. I reused the stock flywheel and have not had any problems with the clutch in terms of pedal feel, engagement, etc. I think it's a pretty good product. I've also driven some cars with the 2, 3, and 4 versions. All are pretty decent.

I think I'm going to upgrade to a billet flywheel and a Kevlar Stg.2 disc soon.

Matt.

The above is a guy that used a spec stage 3 clutch, one of the old style. Its obvious why it broke(small radiuses, stress concentration) and why they changes the design.

At any rate, Spec stood behind their product even though it was out of warranty and supplied the guy with the newer style.

I can only say my experience with Spec has been good as well. I used a Spec Stage 2 in my mild '89 5.0. I have since sold the car and the clutch makes it home behind a 300rwhp 302 and has over 50K miles on it.

My spec has been in for over a year. And since last october, it has seen probably 60ish 7K dumps on slicks (usually in the 1.52-1.54 60' range). It still holds awesome and is really smooth on the street considering how it grabs. Their customer service lacks IMO.........

Here's a look at the latest stuff...
torque ratings are:
stage torque capacity
1 450
2 520
3 640
3+ 800+
4 640
5 1000+

These are standard 10.5" 5.0L style clutch kits. A couple combinations of the above are available as hybrids (like "dual friction"). Also, the billet aluminum pressure plate has a few hundred pounds MORE clamping force over standard and is less likely to flex and it's rebuildable instead of a throwaway piece.

ps: the 10.5" clutch can bolt to our modular flywheels and goes right into a late-4.6 car (Cobra or GT). It shaves a couple pounds off the rotating mass too.
