I am a vendor on Explorerforum so I am very familiar with these vehicles. On Gen1 (1990-94) are open and 28T unless it has a towing package. If I am not mistaken these have small bearing axles in them. All Gen 2 (1995-2001 2-only v6 or 4 door v-8 or v6)/sport trac up to 2005 have 31T carrier with big bearing axles. 90% have Trac Lok rears,especially 1997 and later models. Gen 3 (2002 4 doors) have independant rears with 31T aluminum center sections. All Gen 4 2006-current 4doors & Sport Tracs have independant rear with 31T center sections.
