5.0 4v swap into an 05
This is a huge thread compiled by Joe Dasilva's son Matt on swapping out the 4.6 3v in his 05 GT for the new 5.0 4v with pics. He actually performed this swap over this past christmas holidays while his dad's shop was shutdown.
http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49889 While this car is still very streetable he had to disconnect the instrument cluster. He also has removed the a/c, p/s, sound deadener, and has swapped out the OEM seats for aftermarket. Summary of interesting notes. It seems he is an all motor guy. He had the original 4.6 laying down around 400 rwhp and took it to a best of low low 11's in the 1/4. On the stock clutch! The 5.0 pretty much goes up in place like the 4.6 (no surprise). I found it interesting that the 5.0 shares the same clutch and the stock 3650 will also bolt up. So everything from the clutch disc back is as it was behind his 4.6. (No dimensional change) Yes he installed his old 4.6 clutch behind the new motor. With exhaust, CAI, tune and ?.?? gears he laid down around 430 rwhp and went 10.86@124 this past weekend in Bradenton

Awesome!!!
The clutch worked because he was using his previous 3650 trans (10-spline). FYI, the new 6-speed has a 23 spline input shaft and is a Getrag unit, similar to the later-model Supra Turbo. It's very nice! |

I'm wondering if draining the fluid in favor of some of GM or royal purple synchromesh would fix it. My 05 RSX's 6 speed had this problem too. Honda used motor oil from the factory and the 1/2 shift when cold was a pretty bad problem and even would pop out of 2nd gear from time to time. Honda really had nothing to say about it so some of the guys started putting the synchromesh in the tranny and low and behold, it shifted like butter from that point on. Made a BIG difference in mine. I've got my fingers crossed my 2012 doesn't have any of that drama.

Hmmm. Wonder if anyone has swapped the trans into an earlier year model. The supra trans are tough

For reference:
The new Getrag's input shaft is 23 spine, but it's only 1-1/32" diameter. That's actually a smaller diameter than the standard Ford 10-spline, which is 1-1/16 inch, but the finer splines leave more material for strength. The T56 spline is bigger than both at 1-1/8" inch, 26 spline. It's virtually unbreakable. The Supra Turbo's input shaft is a 1-1/4 inch diameter 14 spline. Very strong too. |

I think it would be an excellent idea for coupe to put a sticky in the drivetrain forum on the various input shafts that came in the t-5, t-45, 3650, t-56, and the tr6060
