Throw-out Bearing Question

My throw-out bearing is now making noise intermittently. If it is going bad, why not make noise all of the time as opposed to off and on? I'm going ahead and carrying the car in next Tuesday to have it replaced (and the radio for that matter).

Re: Throw-out Bearing Question

Mark. Would be a good time to put a nice clutch in there since they'll have it apart.
But it depends on what noise it makes. We use factory Ford TO bearings, made by Federal Mogul, and honestly they sometimes make noise prematurely. I would say maybe 1%, but still some do it. I have looked at several and I cannot explain it.

I should have probably worded it better. It's not like one position on the bearing itself; at least I don't think. When I said intermittent I meant it'll make noise one day, be fine for three days, make it again for an hour, and then stop. It's not even something I can isolate to a certain situation (i.e., traffic, heavy stop and go, etc.) because it does it off and on. I haven't a clue. I'm going to take it in next Tuesday and let them fool with it; plus they can fix/replace my radio.

Never seen something like this before. I've always thought it was a good/bad situation when it came to the bearings.

Re: Throw-out Bearing Question

Marc - Mine did the same thing. Small chatter every now and then. Would take it to the dealship and it would not do a thing. Mine seemed to make more noise though when the car was in gear. After 4 tries the dealer replaced the clutch and cured the problem.

Re: Throw-out Bearing Question

I'm going to end up waiting until it's definitely bad. The dealership pretty much told me that if they can't recreate the problem while the car is there they can't do anything about it.

Re: Throw-out Bearing Question

I had the exact same song and dance. Went to a different service writer and he made them put a new clutch and throw out bearing in it. Try a different writer or dealer. No sense in tearing something else up.
