8.8 question
I just dropped a eaton e-locker in my rear with moser 31spline axles and it is really tight on turning now. i kept the stock pinion with out pulling it and the stock shims on the chunk. but when i tightened the caps up it got real tight to turn. the gear mesh is perfect when i turn it. the pin to holds in the axles was hard to push in, i had to tap it in and the axles are up against it. is this normal for a rearend? or do i need to pull it apart again and redo something i missed?

probably need to re-set the pinion depth, then start over.

new bearings?
I don't know what it is but any rear I have set up within the last 3 years and i installed new carrier bearings, has required me to loosen up the shimming on the carrier just a little bit. I think the new bearings maybe a hair thicker now a days for some reason

there shouldn't be anything wrong with the pinion depth
he didn't change the gear ratio just the axles and carrier and the pinion was never removed and swapping out the carrier/axles does not affect the geometry with that respect since it's still making contact with the same ring gear it's an issue with the carrier/housing/axle/bearings etc |

-or- if you have a good acquaintance at a machine shop, have your stock ones thinned out a few thousandths and try again

you know in thinking about it, i bet it's the carrier itself instead of the bearings, but it's the same solution either way--slightly thinner shims

I looked at buying thinner cast iron shims last year for my bearing job, and they were very expensive. I took a belt sander and thinned them out, but I only did a small amount then check them (with calipers) at several points, to make sure I stayed square. It took a little while, but was cheaper than buying ones from Ford, plus the ones at Ford are special order and you can't return them (the dealer I went to anyhow).
Also when I did my bearing job I had bought two sets of Temkin bearings and of the four, two were one height and two were another, I can't remember which way they were over stock, but I had bought the four so I could get as close as possible.

I got a shim-set from motive gear last time I did gears. Had a variety of thicknesses to make sure it was perfect.
