How much end play do you have? IIRC, somebody makes thrust bearings (#3 main bearing) thicker than stock to compensate for excessive end play. BUT, if it's a stock, non-stroker crank, a new one isn't that expensive.

DAMN! And I thought the main and rod bearing clearance (.035") on my old 302 was bad!

actually it was a between 1/8 and 1/4....that is between the main and the crank, not between the crank and bearing surface. Nonetheless....looks like I'm about to yank my crank (and not for the fun of it!!!) and check the thrust bearing. The convertor was fine so I can rule that out as far as ballooning (supposedly has the anti-ballooning plates in it (or whatever the hell it is they do to em))

I had to clean the shop up before I could even start to work on anything!!!
